Successful Coronary artery bypass
grafting surgery in Elderly with poor Lung Function

A 75 yr old gentlemen, suffering from severe bilateral
bronchiectasis for last 20 yrs due to chronic smoking of
40 yrs duration . This had severely reduced his lung functional
capacity along with this he also had severe Triple vessel
coronary artery disease .
His left ventricular function was also severely depressed
to 20% of normal . He underwent myocardial perfusion scan
to know the viability of heart muscle which showed sufficient
viability.
He underwent quadruple vessel coronary artery bypass surgery
on 31 / 3/ 2004 at Nanavati Hospital. Operation was performed
by Dr. Pavan Kumar and special device “ Centrifugal
Pump” was used to protect vital organs like Lungs,
Kidneys and brain better. His operative and post operative
period was smooth and uneventful due to use of advanced
technique of centrifugal pump and early extubation.
The patient remained in the ICU for 3 days after which
he was shifted to the ward. His stay in the ward was uneventful
and so was discharged after 5 days. He followed up with
us 5 months later which showed an improvement in LV function
(32%) and a significantly better effort tolerance.
